Before your first Pilates class, it is easy to spend more time thinking about the outfit than the session itself. Start with a few practical questions: can you move freely, breathe comfortably and feel covered in different positions? You do not need a complicated studio wardrobe. An outfit you have checked in motion can make arriving feel much simpler.

01 / Pilates Clothing & Style

Choose comfort that works in motion

Pilates clothing needs to accommodate sitting, reaching and bending. BASI Pilates Academy recommends comfortable, flexible clothing that stays in place, while noting that a closer fit can help the teacher observe alignment. That is a useful starting point, rather than a reason to wear something that feels restrictive. 1

Try a few ordinary movements before deciding. Sit on the floor, lift your arms overhead and bend your knees. Notice whether you can concentrate on the movement or immediately want to adjust the garment. Your own comfort is useful information.

Check the waistband and the length

A waistband should feel comfortable when you stand and when you sit. If it rolls, digs in or needs repeated pulling, reconsider the size, rise or cut. One of those choices may suit you better than changing the way you move to accommodate the clothing.

Check the hems too. Fabric gathered under your feet can be distracting, while an ankle or cropped length may feel simpler. There is no single ideal rise or leg length for every person. Choose what works with your proportions and preferred coverage.

Choose a top you can forget about

Reach forward and overhead in your top. Lie back briefly if you can do so comfortably. Check whether the neckline, straps and hem stay where you want them. A fitted tank, comfortable T-shirt or another simple top can all be possibilities; the movement check is more useful than a particular silhouette.

If you wear a sports bra, choose one that feels secure without making breathing uncomfortable. Avoid using the label size alone as proof of fit. Try your top and bra together, since their straps, seams and coverage may feel different as a combination.

Think about coverage before class

Check your outfit under ordinary daylight and in the positions you expect to use. Bend, sit and reach while looking for changes in coverage. If you prefer shorts, consider whether their length and shape feel comfortable when your legs move apart or lift. A fitted layer underneath can offer additional coverage. 1

This is a personal choice, not a dress code for a particular body type. Choose the amount of coverage that lets you feel at ease. Do not assume that a fabric’s colour or thickness guarantees opacity; inspect the actual garment.

Ask about socks and equipment

Before a Reformer session, avoid loose ties, tassels and other hanging garment details that could catch on equipment. BASI includes this in its clothing guidance. 1 Check long necklaces and other accessories as part of the same preparation, and keep your outfit uncomplicated.

Ask your studio whether grip socks are required, whether mats are provided and what else to bring. A studio’s policy can differ from a video or a friend’s experience elsewhere. Confirming it directly is more reliable than buying several accessories before you know what you need.

Make a small first class checklist

Set out your checked outfit, the socks requested by your studio and a water bottle. Tie back your hair if that helps you see and move comfortably. If you travel to class across a warm afternoon or an air-conditioned commute, an easy removable layer can be useful before and after the session.

Give yourself enough time to arrive without rushing. Tell the teacher you are new and ask anything you are unsure about. Clothing is one part of preparation; clear instructions and an appropriate beginner class matter too. Your outfit should leave you free to pay attention to those things.

07 / A few things you might wonder

A little more
clarity.

Do I need leggings for Pilates?

No particular garment is essential simply because it is called Pilates clothing. Choose bottoms that let you move comfortably and provide the coverage you want. Check your studio’s requirements before class.

Does everyone wear grip socks?

Policies vary. Ask your studio whether grip socks are required, especially for apparatus classes. Follow its guidance rather than assuming all Pilates sessions use the same footwear.

Should I buy a full outfit before my first session?

Start by checking clothing you already own. If it moves comfortably and meets the studio’s requirements, you may have what you need. Your first class can help you decide what you would prefer next time.

A good first Pilates outfit is one you have tested and feel comfortable wearing. Make a little space to move, check the details once, and let the class itself take your attention.
